PaddleHeads Attack Held in Check in Loss to Voyagers
Naumann Goes the Distance in Loss to Great Falls Friday
Great Falls, MT- Offensive success played a big role in action to start the week between the Great Falls Voyagers, and Missoula PaddleHeads. In 3 games played in the Garden City, 53 runs combined were put on the board by the Voyagers, and PaddleHeads. Things would play out much differently in action Friday night however at Centene Stadium in Great Falls on a breezy evening. Both offenses would be held off the board for the first 3 frames. 4 runs combined would be put on the board when the dust settled as neither team managed to put much of anything together. However, the runs scratched across by the Voyagers would prove to be enough for Tyler Naumann who would pitch a beauty.
The Voyagers managed to tally 3 runs in the fourth, and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. That would be more than enough for the southpaw Naumann who would pitch a complete game gem allowing only 1 unearned run in a 3-1 defeat. This marked the first time this season an opposing pitcher has gone the distance opposite the PaddleHeads. Furthermore, Naumann became the first Great Falls pitcher to pitch a complete game this season.
Nauman scattered 6 hits over his 9 innings of work while striking out 8. The double play ball would also be a big weapon for Nauman who would induce double plays on 3 separate occasions in the win for the Voyagers. On a night where the Voyagers offense also struggled, Great Falls did just enough in the middle frames to support the effort on the mound.
Adam Oviedo would get the first run of the game on the board for either team in the fourth with a one-out triple to score Michael Deeb. Deeb knocked in a run himself in the next half inning with a sacrifice fly which made the score 3-0 in the fifth as part of a 2-run rally. This would be the final time Great Falls would find the scoreboard. Deep finished the action 2-for-3 and Oviedo was 1-for-4.
The PaddleHeads offense would find their only success against Naumann in the 7th inning recording 3 hits in the frame to load the bases. Jayson Newman would score the only run for Missoula on an error on the infield with one-out to make the score 3-1. Naumann would stand tall after that sequence however, retiring the next 2 batters he faced consecutively as the PaddleHeads would leave the bases loaded in the frame.
Despite coming in a losing effort, Nate Boyle once again impressed out of the bullpen for the PaddleHeads in 3 shutout innings. The Ohio native would only allow 2 base runners in those frames while striking out a pair. Boyle has been at his best over his last 10 innings pitched out of the pen allowing no runs on only 4 combined hits in 3 separate outings.
The PaddleHeads (44-19) will look to get the bats rolling again in game 2 of the series at Centene Stadium opposite the Voyagers (36-27). First pitch from the Electric City is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Hear the call on ESPN Missoula 102.9 F.M.
